What to know what this weeks lesson plan is?  I guess in the spirit of Open Source, the lesson plan should be published as it comes to hand.

Hacking - Good? Bad? Ethics?
This presentation comes our of a very interesting conversation that Sarah and I had about Kevin Mitnick.
  • Telco Investment -http://www.australianit.news.com.au/story/0,24897,22548421-15306,00.html
  • IT Investment -http://www.australianit.news.com.au/story/0,24897,22574517-15306,00.html
  • People want jobs in IT.  Hackers compromise investment in IT.  Rather than securing a resource, the resource is simply not developed.
  • Limited freedom in an internet free world - http://www.australianit.news.com.au/story/0,24897,22548525-15306,00.html
  • Bad guy? Good guy?  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Mitnick
  • 'He broke into DEC's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_network and copied DEC's software, for which he was later convicted.'
  • at the age of 12. He realized he could bypass the punchcard system used for the Los Angeles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Angeles%2C_California) bus system: by buying his own punch, he could get free bus rides anywhere in the greater LA area.
  • (19:28:52) Sarah: depends how you define good guy
(19:28:56) Sarah: he didn't kill anyone
(19:29:05) Sarah: he didn't have the intent to steal
    (19:29:07) Sarah: or kill
    (19:29:08) Sarah: or attack
(19:29:13) Sarah: he was a hacker, he just wanted to explore
    (19:29:14) Sarah: and learn
  • (19:31:40) Sarah: one of the things he was arrested for was having a list of credit card numbers which was so widely available that everyone had it
(19:31:49) Sarah: he never used it for anything, let alone credit card theft
(19:31:56) Sarah: but that counted against him in the trial
  • Understanding US Anti-Trust laws - Microsoft couldn't stop if they wanted to.  The law also says that Bill Gates must protect the company.
  • (19:34:40) Sarah: yes, he occasionally did 'bad' things
(19:34:57) Sarah: like hacking mcdonalds's radio system and annoying the drivethrough operaters
(19:35:01) Sarah: but he never really hurt anyone
  • Who's job is it to protect the company? Should the company take matters into its own hands? What can a company the size of McDonalds do?  What happens if the law just stands by on its hands?
  • (19:30:57) Don Gould: the presentation I've read about kevin so far is that he was nieve and didn't consider the rights of many other people in the community who he had potential massive impact
  • (19:35:49) Sarah: because he had been misrepresented and they were scared of his abilities
  • Who was scared and why were they scarred?  Who was reasuring them that there is/was nothing to fear?
  • (19:35:57) Sarah: he spent some huge amount of time in solitary confinement
  • (19:37:07) Sarah: short of actaully trying to blow the world up, i don't think anyone ever deserves that

  • The purpose of this weeks lesson is to give consideration to these issues.  To explore our understanding of the issues, culture, our future, problems, solutions and talk about our views.  To talk about our views we first have to consider the issues and form views.   Then, and only then can we share our views.  It should also be noted that this is not an intervention for any or everyone.
  • Remeber, an objective of this lesson is to learn something, to have fun and a laugh, not to take yourself to seriously.
  • Meet our panel of experts
  • IAD - Do you have it?

  • Internet Culture, habits, health - Gamers, Dating Sites, Forums, IM/IRC
  • "Why is it socially accepted to watch tv for hours, but not to play games for hours or internet for hours?"
  • Question:  Is the programming we see on TV managed?  Does the news follow a strict format?
  • Question:  Why do we have broadcasting standards?
  • Lowered Inhibition due to privacy, isolation, feeling of safety
'The improbability of any local, real life repercussions for on-line social activity produces a new and poorly understood psychological phenomena; people feel free to express themselves in an unrestrained manner. "If all computer-mediated communication systems can be said to have one single unifying effect upon human behavior it is that usage tends to cause the user to become less inhibited."' - http://webpages.charter.net/stormking/iad.html
  • Question: Are online Role playing games good or bad for you?  " In particular, depression and symptoms of dissociation were highly correlated with the high fantasy group. "
  • Question: How much do providers/stakeholders realise and pray on human weakness?  Is the internet addictive like a smoke and should the Internet industry be made to pay for health care as a result of their product.  Should we over tax telecommunications to cover it's health cost impact?
  • Question: how can we enhance the internet to fix the health problems of IAD?
  • Question: Is texting like IAD?
  • Point:  Gambling isn't a problem, but can become one that has huge finical impact on people/families.  What about the cost of Internet, mobile phones?  Are we renting and not saving because we're spending on telecommunications?
  • Question:  Does IAD lead to other mental disorders?  Do mental disorders lead to IAD?
  • Question:  Can I go through your school bag?
  • Question:  Would you write yourself a note about your feelings for someone else and then leave it in your bag?
  • Question:  Would you keep an online blog? What do you tell people in MSN/IM/IRC?
  • Question:  Do you bounce around the room?
  • Question:  Do you have the urge to drive your car up the wrong side of the highway just for fun?  Need for Speed
  • Question:  Does practising these skills/talents/anti-social behaviours on line impact on you/people?
  • Question:  Would you like to be telepathic and be able to send messages to peoples minds?  It's time to text the person sitting next to you, did you pass notes in class as a kid? Can you type a message on your glasses with your eyes and send it to my glasses?
  • Question:  Do you think the experts understand the nature of IM/IRC communications?  Is txt and IM messaging the same language as a letter?  Is an IM chat session the same as being in the pub with 10 people, all wanting to talk to you at the same time?

'This electronic eavesdropping is one possible source for the positive reinforcement that the nature of the Internet provides to those for whom it's use has become pathological.'

Who plays big brother at the pub?  Should ISPs be involved in playing big brother?

  • Question:  Are you learning to multi task on a new level? Can you concentrate on a number of tasks at once while you're also having to focus on a number of conversations?  Are we infact learning healthy skills?
  • Question:  What brings change, healthy change to our culture?  Is our society changing?  Is what is socially acceptable to our parents, grandparents, relevant to us?
  • Question:  Do people become something they're not or just show us who they really are?
  • http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Personals.aspx - what does this tell us about the happiness of people out there?
  • Question:  Does IM/IRC promote friendships that lead to effective relationships?

    'This anonymous quote summarizes some of these qualities of the people that may be prone to IAD;
/Additionally, the utility of the activity has be called into question when you are looking at an intensely repeated behavior. In the case of frequent and continual use of the Internet what I see most frequently in my practice (I am a psychiatrist in general private practice) is that the Internet becomes a way of avoiding intimate social contact. The hook however is that it looks like contact given the freedom that people take to communicate their most intimate thoughts and so it has the appearance of intimacy while in fact the communication is just with a computer screen and words on a line. There is a self-delusion of real depth and emotion here when it allows for the most complete masquerade (I will only show what I want) and the most complete control (I will only interact when I want) and no one truly knows who I am/ (Anonymous email post) '
  • Class Test:  http://www.netaddiction.com/resources/parents_test.htm
  • http://netaddictionrecovery.blogspot.com/

"Hello: I play World of Warcraft which I'm sure must be responsible for a great deal of online addiction. I have gone through periods of playing somewhat intensively which I may do for up to 4 hours 4 evenings in a week but then I am suddenly so bored with it that I don't touch it for a month or two then repeat the cycle. So maybe a binge addiction!"
  • http://www.netaddiction.com/faq.htm - Question: How much resource is out there to help you?
