Tonight I finally got the Vodafone Vodem that the Christchurch City Council and Think Community Networks funded for LES, set up with ICS so that the group could share the connection during our lessons.
Given that we hold our lessons in the Upper Riccarton Public Library, you might be wondering why we need a Vodem. You would be for given for thinking that the library should have an internet connection that we could use. The library is on the grounds of the Riccarton High School. We did try to use their internet access. Content filtering and paranoid security are rapidly becoming a barrier to learning. Despite there being three different data connections in to the building we had to provide a mobile connection to get our lessons on line. It took us 6 months and a great deal of lobbying, it is now done and the second group of teens to take on Linux in the library will finally be able to communicate with the global community this week! |
